Juniata Scholarships
The following scholarship opportunities are available to Juniata study abroad students. You will complete the application process as you are applying for your study abroad opportunity.
Please note: Some scholarships may require an additional essay, if needed, this requirement will be requested from the students who are eligible for the scholarship.General International Travel Funds
The Barbara Shaffer Gumbiner ’59 Endowed Fund for International Study
The fund will provide resources for students with an interest in international experience, with the preference being to help students in good academic standing to defray expenses related to study away. In concert with the Provost and the Office of Student Financial Planning, the Dean of International Education will oversee the process of selecting a student or students each year.Financial Need Scholarships
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
This scholarship is to help offset potential costs and barriers to underserved students in their pursuit to study abroad. Eligible applicants could include, but are not limited to, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+. Amounts of up to $3,000 can be awarded to students for either short-term or semester/year programs. This scholarship was helped created in part by Alumna, Zhorea McAnuff ‘21, who studied abroad in Lille, France. The Kepple Endowment will be used to provide $1,000 to any student who applies with an essay and maintains eligibility for study abroad for a semester/year and is deemed as having high financial need. The Kepple Endowment will be used to provide $500 to any student who applies with an essay and maintains eligibility for study abroad for a semester/year and is deemed as having moderate financial need. The determination of need will be designated by the Office of Student Financial Planning.
A participant in short-term program abroad and for which the student is enrolled for a total minimum of three credits and who applies with an essay and maintains eligibility for study abroad and is deemed as having moderate to high financial need is eligible for up to $500 in support. Eagles Abroad Scholars are ineligible to apply for the Kepple Endowment for summer study. An Eagles Abroad Scholar may apply for year or semester support.

Bliss-Karns-Schwemmlein Scholarship for Study Abroad
It is an endowed merit scholarship and its award shall be made to a full-time Juniata student who is eligible for, and who plans, a full-academic year of study in France, Germany, Russia or Spain in a Juniata sponsored program in which English is not the language of instruction. This merit scholarship award is to supplement existing grant and aid funds that the student would normally be awarded—not to substitute for such other financial assistance.A selection committee consisting of the President of the College, the Dean of International Education and Dr. Michael Henderson shall choose the student. The committee shall base its selection on a review of the following: the candidate’s record of academic achievement at Juniata; the candidate’s demonstrated potential for future academic excellence; letters of recommendation from two faculty members; a letter from the candidate outlining how he/she might promote language study and international programs upon returning to Juniata. This award is handed out during Spring Convocation.
Dr. Chumpol Phornprapha Experiential Learning Travel Grant
The Dr. Chumpol Phornprapha Experiential Learning Travel Grant is intended to supplement the cost of off-campus experiential learning experiences. Preference will be given to students with financial need (as determined by Pell grant eligibility and confirmed by Student Financial Planning) and who are studying in nontraditional locations – Africa, Asia, and Latin and South America. Students who represent African, Latino, Asian and Native American populations will be given special consideration. Draft an essay of about 500 words in length which addresses what you hope to gain from the experience abroad and how you will share your experiences upon your return to campus. Please note that a follow-up experience on campus is a requirement for the grant award. The study abroad scholarship application is the same as for Juniata Scholarships. The exact amount of the award will be determined depending upon the number of awardees. The minimum award is $500 per student.Jane P. Carpenter Endowed Scholarship for International Study in France
The Jane P. Carpenter Endowed Scholarship for International Study in France shall be awarded to a student or students who show exceptional promise in the study of French. This scholarship is intended to provide additional funds. Upon the recommendation of the Chair of World Languages and Cultures, the main French professor, and the Dean of International Education, the recipient or recipients will be selected by the Provost. Preference shall be given to students who are studying for a full year in France. Upon return from France, the student, or students, will be expected to be actively involved in promoting the study of French on Juniata’s campus.Nyce Scholarship for Study in Latin America
Any full-time Juniata College student who chooses to study in Latin America is eligible to receive the Nyce Scholarship. The required study may include any of the following: a semester abroad, a full academic year abroad, a study tour during the academic year, or a study tour during the summer. Recipients shall be chosen by the Dean of International Education.Provides a variable stipend for students who are going to study for a year, a semester or in a summer program. Study site must be in Spanish. GAIAS in Ecuador does not qualify. Applicants are required to submit an essay explaining what they will do upon returning from Latin America to help educate students at Juniata about issues relating to Latin America. Fulfillment of the commitment must be completed during senior year. The award will be given at Spring Convocation.
POE Specific Scholarships
Gerard Lepoutre Endowed Fund
This fund shall be used for the benefit of individual students with personal needs and problems during the academic year, where the language of instruction is not the student's first language. For example, funds might be used to provide airfare home in case of a family emergency, or funds might be provided for travel or other activities that the student cannot afford but would further the student's cultural development. For example, funds for a participating field trip might be appropriate. Students would not apply for such funds but rather Juniata employees involved with the students would bring cases of need to the attention of the persons responsible for distributing such funds. First preference would be given to students studying chemistry or other natural sciences to or from the Catholic University in Lille, France. Second preference would be given to students studying chemistry or other natural sciences for a full year in a second language other than French. Third preference shall be given to any Juniata students studying for a full year in a second language
Philbrook W. Smith and Edgar R. Hartt '98 History Scholarship
This endowed memorial fund will be awarded to a student traveling abroad to provide assistance with the cost of travel. Preference shall be given to students with a POE in history. Selection shall be made by the Provost in consultation with the History Department.Submit an essay addressing the philosophy of this scholarship. Discuss why you are applying to the specific site you have chosen and how it relates to your major. Explain why you should be granted this scholarship.
Rinehart-Darkatsch Scholarship for International Study in Education
Awarded sophomore year for junior year abroad to students in the field of education, with a preference given to elementary education majors. Applicants are selected with regard to financial need, GPA, and an evaluation of the student’s practicum experience. The applicant must submit an essay explaining how his/her education program is enhanced through study abroad and what he/she will do upon return to share an understanding of pedagogical principles and methods. Selection will be made by the Provost in consultation with the Department of Education. Fulfillment of the commitment must be completed during senior year.
